 Rochdale canal has been completely refurbished in the last 10 years and is now used regularly by barges travelling from Manchester to Yorkshire. However, travelling from Yorkshire to Manchester requires a police escort when they reach the Newton Heath area, and at weekends the barges go through in a convoy. Otherwise the barges are liable to attack from the 'underclass' of society! This photo was taken at the 'Slattocks Lock' in March 2009. |
