Cowm reservoir in Whitworth is used for water sports such as water skiing, and it can also be walked around, which is a distance of about 2 miles. There is a visitors centre as can be seen below.
A popular place to go for a pint is Owd Betts pub which is about 2 miles through Norden, on the tops. They also do good food and from here you can walk up to the windmills on the moors. Some photos are shown below.
